Hello! For those who don't know me my name is Elisabetta Fumagalli. I am 48 years old. I am a mother to a teenager, home educator and work for a charity as a support worker for children and families. I am involved with my local community and help organise a yearly arts festival. When my energy allows me to I also make artwork and exhibit.
This has happened less and less over the past few years, since I have been feeling rundown and exhausted. Visits to my GP where fruitless as my symptoms where attributed to me getting older! (great) In October 2007 my left breast suddenly swelled up and when it receded I noticed a large lump. My GP sent me to my local hospital, where it was decided that it was nothing to worry about. The lump persisted and in January 2008 I went back to my GP. This time she sent me to a large teaching hospital for a 2nd opinion. Two weeks later on my 48th birthday it was confirmed I had cancer and was offered chemotherapy, followed by surgery (lumpectomy), radiotherapy and hormone treatment for the following 5 years. After several tests the hospital decided a mastectomy was necessary and possibly a double mastectomy, since the right breast seems to be affected too. After recovering from the initial shock and doing my research I decided there are less invasive ways of dealing with cancer.
I contacted Yes to Life, who put me in touch with Cancer Options, who give consultation to people with cancer about all the treatments available and not just what is available on the NHS. They were great in pointing me in the right direction. They suggested I see Dr Trefzer, who runs the High Tree clinic in Uckfield. They also said that my history of feeling unwell and run down is a typical sign of my immune system not working. Not least because of a tooth infection with which I have been battling since the mid 80s. This has become so bad now that when I am in pain I am unable to function. I have seen a number of NHS and private dentists. None of which have been able to establish the source of the infection. Several courses of antibiotics have made no difference. I need to address this health problem as well as the cancer, since it will continue to impair and deplete my immune system and my body will not be strong enough to fight the cancer and stay healthy once the cancer has gone. Also as Cancer Options pointed out, going through chemotherapy would leave me worse off in the end, since this would further damage my immune system.
Dr Trefzer suggested I go for treatment to the Paracelsus Clinic in Switzerland, which is a specialist clinic for chronic and acute illnesses, including cancer, and has a dedicated biological dental department. I would kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. Their success rate with breast cancer is 95%, whereas conventional treatment would offer me only 80%. Dr Trefzer would be able to support the treatment here in England.
I have sent a request to the Paracelsus clinic and in the meantime have started treatment with Dr Trefzer at the High Tree clinic in Uckfield. This suits me well at the moment as my son is doing his GCSE's now.
