Background

The government is likely to make an announcement very soon about whether or not they will grant Statutory Regulation to herbalists. We have heard that they may be considering abandoning their long held commitment to Statutory Regulation in favour of a "light touch licensing scheme". This would be a big mistake. Only Statutory Regulation can ensure public safety and patient choice.

At present, anyone can call themselves a Chinese medicine practitioner and treat the public. They do not have to be qualified or competent and yet they have access to powerful herbal medicines.

In February 2010, the Old Bailey heard how a civil servant suffered cancer and kidney damage after taking a banned medicine sold by a Chinese medicine shop. The regulation of Chinese medicine practitioners would protect the public from such cases of malpractice.

As you may know, it is vital that herbalists achieve Statutory Regulation before a new EU legislation comes into place in 2011.

From April 2011, a new EU law will mean that even fully qualified Chinese medicine practitioners will lose access to the majority of the herbs and medicines on which they rely. Many herbs and medicines will only be available to medical professionals who are regulated by the government, such as GPs. Many practitioners will go out of business, and many patients will not be able to receive the treatment that they need. The government can prevent this by granting statutory regulation to Chinese medicine practitioners.

Nutritional Supplement Restrictions

You may have heard discussion in the media regarding the issue of nutritional supplements and the EU's wish to curb available levels of current nutritional supplements. It is important to make people aware of these impending laws so that our voices can be heard and as a society we are interested in saving our right to use these supplements. If you support this, there is an online petition to join, just follow the link: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/anh-vitaminrestrictions

'For example, there is a risk that the level of beta-carotene may be set at less than that typically found in two carrots, and that for selenium, less than the amount found in two brazil nuts.'

Downing Street petition to stop vitamins being prescription only

This is a petition to the Prime Minister to oppose the adoption of the Codex Alimentarius (WHO/UN) proposals for restriction of presently freely available herb/vitamin/mineral food supplements.

Margaret Rothwell, the petition creator, warns that:

"The principle of self-medication with herbal, vitamin, mineral food supplements would be restricted to 'prescription only' status if the Codex Alimentarius is applied in this country.

Since the NHS priorities are ill health diagnosis and treatment, the good health preservation that supplements provide will be inaccessible to the majority of our population and the cost to the NHS will increase, as the health of the population will decline"

If you feel inclined to sign the petition, you can do so at:

http://petitions.number10.gov.uk/Vitamins/

We feel very strongly that it would be disastrous if this proposal went through, and so urge you to take a few moments to add your voice to the cause. We must make a stand against this to preserve our freedom of health choice.

Please send this link to as many of your contacts as you can. Every voice counts.

Thank you for your support.
